A Growing Need
According to The Commonwealth Fund Australia, we have a globally acknowledged successful healthcare system, which will soon be in greater need. As the average age of Australians increases, demand for more efficient, convenient, and empathetic healthcare will rise.
To put our situation into perspective, the average life expectancy of Australians is now over 80 years, 201,062 of these elderly have Glaucoma. If diagnosed at 50 years of age, and requiring a review every 6 months (60 reviews over the rest of their lifespan), this results in over 12 million assessments for the management of just one disease in Australia.
The Answer: 'Collaborative Care' and 'Centric Care'
Optometry Australia in their March 2020 publication, 'Pharma' and Optometry Australia 2040 Vision have proposed the concept 'Collaborative Care' and 'Centric Care' as a solution. Collaborative Care is all about communication between carers, patients, and health providers, in order to facilitate the best practice treatment that we professionals can provide.
Collaborative and Centric Care will not only improve efficiency but also encourage early detection and treatment, which will prevent delays, unnecessary loss of health, and excess expense later on. Health care professionals in the future will play multiple roles in our delivery of service.
