Free Optical Aids: NSW Spectacles Program
What is the NSW Spectacles Program?
The NSW Spectacles Program was established by the NSW Government in 1992, in order to provide free optical aids to vulnerable or disadvantaged individuals. It does this via a 'network of approved participating optometrists and optical dispensers' (NSW Government).
The principles for this program are outlined in the program guidelines, found on the NSW Government Communities and Justice website. They include respectful and timely services, free optical appliances to eligible individuals, good quality products, and monitored public funds for the integrity of the program.
Who is Involved?
The program ultimately aims to increase the engagement of disadvantaged and vulnerable people with society. As such, eligible individuals include Australian permanent residents, over the retirement age, living in NSW with an income lower than the full aged pension. Optical products and services are provided by participating optometrists and optical dispensers, using their own supply chains. Approximately 95% of total orders previously made to the program were for spectacles, which were required to have a guaranteed life of at least 2 years. The costs of these products and services are then reimbursed to the optometrist.
Mobile Eye Clinic
Mobile Eye Clinic is a registered provider for the NSW Spectacles Program. This means that we are able to approve and supply free glasses, given the appropriate documentation. Mobile Eye Clinic often caters to the elderly, many of whom may benefit from this ongoing program.
